Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, hardback edition. Dent Dutton, 1952 with illustrations by Lucy Kemp Welch.

The perfect gift for horse fans! A lovely vintage edition with a horse decorated cloth binding and gorgeous colour plates. There is no dust jacket. Front free endpaper is removed. There is an inscription and some tearing to the title page. Scuffing to rear pastedown, thumb-marking present. Ceasing to gutter. Boards have edge-wear. Text block is shaky. Overall condition: Acceptable.

Anna Sewell’s novel was firstly published in 1877 and it instantly became a huge success. Sewell was very ill while she was writing Black Beauty and she died five months after her only novel was released.
Although Black Beauty is seen as a children’s book, it was actually not intended to be a novel for kids. It portrays the life of a working horse in Victorian England and made people aware of cruel practices such as the use of check rein and blinkers. A heart-warming read with beautiful illustrations.

All antique books will be beautifully gift-wrapped for protection.
