The benefits of encouraging children to read books
Children who read on a regular basis have better literacy skills, a better knowledge of words and, above all, have a better understanding of the world around them. And aren't books the best food for children's imagination and curiosity?
Why not keep reading together with your child? Even when children are a bit older, reading together is still a great time to bond with your child. Some books still can be enjoyed by children and adults alike- think about classics such as Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden or the Harry Potter series.
And if not....Even if you do not continue reading together, initiate discussions about the book. Ask your child what they like or dislike about the book and why. Ask them about the characters and, if applicable, about the illustrations.
Reading is fun, make time for it! Reading shouldn't become a chore that has to be done. The reading experience should be enjoyable and fun. This is were we come into play! We believe in the magic of books: the entire experience, from opening the beautifully-wrapped book to reading it, shows children the power of books. And above all, give your child time to read! Nothing is better than a daily routine through which reading is encouraged.
Encourage reading by reading. Perhaps your child used to love books but suddenly changed his or her mind. Firstly, don't worry. We all go through different stages, even as adults. But one thing that I can highly recommend is to read yourself. By showing your child your love for books it is more likely that they feel encouraged to read themselves. A house full of books is a house full of adventures!
