How to get Teenagers reading

No, reading is not a chore. Too often teenagers are forced to read. Unfortunately that is often counterproductive. Both, at home and in school, reading shouldn't be described as a chore that one has to do but rather as a fun activity that takes you to another world. This is why books are often so much better than movies! For instance, let's think about The Hunger Games. Are the books not so much more gripping and detailed than the film? And is it not more fun to use one's own imagination?

Model reading for your Teen. A good way of promoting reading in your teenager is by being a avid reader yourself. Growing up in a home full of books is more likely to boost your teenager's interest in books. Be a role model!

Don't force your Teenager to read. Positive encouragement is better! Let's be honest, it is never a good idea to force someone to read. Positive encouragement is much more effect... Perhaps a Book Club subscription would be a great way to promote reading in your teenager !?

Discussions! A good book might lead to a lot of questions. By initiating interesting discussions and showing interest in your teenager's books you do not only promote critical thinking but you might be also able to motivate them. For example, you could ask them about the topic of the book, whether they like it or not, and (most importantly) why they like it.

Social Media and reading... sometimes! Check out our facebook and instagram page for regular updates! We would love to hear from your teenager and receive book ratings. We are also always keen on publishing literary reviews on our facebook page. Social Media isn't always bad! But of course, there is a limit to everything. Reading time should never be taken up by reading posts on social media. This leads to the next point.

Turn off all distractions. Turn the TV and radio off and encourage your teenager to turn of her or his phone too. Nothing is better than a distraction free reading zone.

There should be time to read. Teenagers often have many commitments. School and school work take up a big chunk of time and then there is the importance of a social life. Sometimes we all need a little reminder that we need to slow down and give ourselves time and space to relax and enjoy a good book. In stressful times a good book and a hot chocolate can do wonders! Perhaps it also might be a good idea to create a specific reading space at home. A reading nook (basically a super comfortable armchair with lots of pillows and a good reading light) might look particularly inviting.
