Reading Tips

Make reading a daily routine. Whether at lunch time or at nap time, pick a time and make reading to a daily routine. Even if you don't have much time to spare, reading every day for a few minutes with your toddler helps improve their language and cognitive skills.

Give them your undivided attention. Turn off your mobile phone on silent and turn off your TV and radio! During reading times try to focus only on your child and the book. Reading gives you time and space to bond with your little one. Thus, reading can promote the formation of a relationship between parents and children.

Explore the illustrations and words. And don't forget to take a look at the book cover! For example, ask your toddler what the book could be about or where it could take place Point to the pictures or more specifically, to shapes, colours, animals, expressions.... Toddlers love to explore the world around them. Books for their age group are filled with beautiful illustrations that give you and your child so much to talk about. Relate the story or the characters in the book to people or pets your child knows. Show your toddler the words when you are reading. By doing so, children become more aware of the different shapes of letters. It is also beneficial to encourage children to repeat reoccurring words and phrases. Talk about the story itself and try to encourage a discussion. Ask questions such as 'Why is Peter happy?' or 'Where is Katie?'. Don't over complicate it but try to encourage to toddler to think about the story and the meaning it is trying to convey.

Use different voices for different characters. Use different voices when reading to your toddler to make the story come alive. Make funny noises and sounds!

Be creative. You could make up a song with your toddler that relates in some way to the book or perhaps you could ask her or him to paint a picture about the book.

Your toddler knows the story by heart? Let your child finish the sentences!

Let your toddler take over. Perhaps you have read the same book over and over again. Now it is your toddler's turn. Let your child take over, let him or her hold the book and turn the pages.
